Ukraine is set to receive new light armored vehicles 4×4 Mobile Strike Force Vehicle (MSFV) from the United States, an enhanced version of the M1117 Armored Security Vehicle.
Originally developed for the now-defunct Afghan National Army, the model stands out for offering better protection against explosives and an extended hull, providing more internal space. The contract provides for the production of 65 units by Textron, along with spare parts, funded by the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.
Ukrainian forces are already using hundreds of standard M1117 vehicles, sent by the US from military stockpiles. However, the MSFVs offer additional advantages, such as the ability to equip different weapon systems, including machine guns and grenade launchers. The ambulance version, also planned, could increase the capacity for casualty evacuation in combat zones.
Smaller and lighter than tanks, the MSFVs offer mobility and ease of maintenance, although they have more limited armor. Still, their protection against mines, improvised explosive devices, and artillery shrapnel can be crucial in the current war context.
There is no set timeline for delivery, but the arrival of these vehicles is expected to bolster Ukraine’s arsenal amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

American M1117 armored personnel carriers, which were equipped with a grenade launcher, appeared for the first time with the Ukrainian armed forces. In November 2022, the US announced they would transfer 250 such APCs to Ukraine, though this won’t happen before 2025. Good job pic.twitter.com/pk0Q67RfGB
